We were invited as guests to join @purjelaiva Svanhild to the annual Tervasaaren tynnyri - regatta of traditional ships in Helsinki, Finland. We were there last year, racing with Byr, and brought home the price: the wooden barrel. We had a task to fill it with herring, but as Byr stayed in Iceland this winter, the icelandic herring barrel is still pending delivery. Maybe next year! Congratulations to @purjelaivaingrid for winning this year’s race! The regatta was followed by a fantastically fun evening with music and the Finnish sailing community getting together to share stories and memories from along the years. The next day there was an open visiting day for anyone to come see the all the ships inside and out at @stadinsilakkamarkkinat in Kauppatori. First snow has arrived to the North with a big storm a few days ago! This is our home port for the winter, Siglufjörður from up the air. Now the island was quiet and peaceful, although we had quite a swell coming from a storm somewhere up North. Hiking up the bird cliffs of Skálanes was a great experience - totally worth it despite the armpit-deep lupine we scrambled through to get there. The fulmars were so close to us we could hear the sound of wind in their feathers when they flew by and clouds from the sea were creeping over the highest cliffs behind us. Fulmars are called “storm birds” in Finnish, which is a well-suited name for them.
